The US Geological Survey, which routinely works with the US Forest Service, admitted to falsifying water quality results.
The agency estimates as a result of presenting false results, taxpayers and private entities spent $108 million on unnecessary cleanup of "contaminated areas", or other associated expenditures.

"Researchers [including the Forest Service] around the world rely on USGS data, and it often shapes laws, regulations and policy. The inspector general’s report said the bad data from the Colorado lab could erode confidence in the entire agency."
